Longtime broadcaster Peter Young passes away

By Judy Owen
MSSA members were deeply saddened to learn Peter Young passed away from cancer on Feb. 2, 2026, at the Riverview Health Centre with family by his side.
Members take some comfort in knowing they were able to honour Young’s outstanding sports broadcasting career not once, but twice, last year.
Young was selected early last year to be the 2025 MSSA Media Roll of Honour inductee, with the ceremony planned for November. However, when members learned Young’s cancer had returned, a decision was made to also try to recognize his accomplishments at an earlier event.
When the association’s digital display at the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame was officially unveiled in July, Young was also officially announced as being the 2025 inductee. His family and plenty of media friends attended the event, with Scott Taylor introducing Young and highlighting his decades’ long career. Young’s speech was heartfelt and members were grateful he could enjoy being in the spotlight.
Young was also able to attend his November induction at the Hall of Fame luncheon, where some of the people in the crowd were athletes he had covered during his career that began in radio broadcasting as a teen in his hometown of Fort William, Ont. He moved to Winnipeg in 1974.

Young and his family enjoyed the events, which he said were special to him because his grandson, Alexander, was able to attend both.
Although there was a glitch in having Young’s induction plaque at the November ceremony, MSSA members Jim Bender and Judy Owen were able to deliver it to his home. He held it with a smile on his face and pointed out a spot on the wall where he planned to hang it. Along with his wife, Marlene, the four toasted his career with some shooters.
Throughout his career at CKY Winnipeg and CTV, Young covered the WHA, NHL, CFL, Olympics and countless other sports events as the host or producer of more than 100 episodes of the Wide World of Sports. He became a media fixture for sports fans and a role model for sports journalists, who reached out to him last year after he revealed his grim prognosis on social media.
Young ensured he spent time with his friends in the sports field, including the many reporters he hired and mentored over the years. He proudly attended a CKY reunion of radio and TV broadcasters last year and posted photos.
โPeter gave me my first job in TV,โ Kim Babij wrote in a Facebook comment after Young’s passing. โI was always grateful to him for that. He respected and trusted women in our industry (which couldn’t be said for everyone else!).
โHe was a kind man, a huge personality with an even bigger heart.โ
Young made the most of the time he had left, and those who knew him are glad they could tell him how much he meant to their lives and careers. We’ve lost a one-of-a-kind talent with Young’s passing.
He leaves behind wife Marlene, sons Jason and Branden and two grandchildren.

Winnipeg Football Club president earns CFL’s Commissioners Award
By Jim Bender
The MSSA congratulates Winnipeg Football Club President/CEO Wade Miller for being honoured with the Canadian Football Leagueโs Commissionerโs Award for his contributions to Canadian football.
โWade is a true football hero to his team, his community and our entire country,โ CFL Commissioner Stewart Johnston said in a statement.
The former Bombers special teams ace was named to his current position in 2013 when the club was struggling both on and off the field.
With a focus on his vision for the club, Miller worked closely with the Bombersโ board to chart a different course for the team, installing strong football leaders in head coach Mike OโShea and general manager Kyle Walters, while instilling new energy and a fan-first mentality throughout the organization, the statement said.
The shift in culture and leadership has brought about success in every facet of the Bombers. The team has earned a winning record in each of the past nine seasons, resulting in five consecutive championship appearances, and culminating in two Grey Cup victories, including a 2019 win that ended the franchiseโs 28-year drought.
Since 2018, the Bombers have played in front of crowds exceeding 30,000 on a league-leading 33 occasions. In 2025, the team topped the CFL in attendance for a fourth straight year, while selling out an entire season for the first time in franchise history.
โWhile the victories and the fan support are tremendous, itโs the teamโs impact in the community that will be felt for generations,โ Johnston said. โWade has been a strong proponent for youth football across Manitoba, as well as a steadfast champion of our leagueโs support for Indigenous community relations and reconciliation.โ
Miller and the Blue Bombers organization have been one of the driving forces in making the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation a key date in the CFL calendar, elevating the weekend slate of games to raise awareness of past tragedies, while fundraising in support of local Indigenous organizations and community initiatives.
